There are worse forms of subsistence living than that of a Southern California Lifeguard (1976). The shore-patrolling professional’s days are passed partially dressed beneath a caressing sun in sweet breezes, surrounded by buxom and physically fit females similarly attired. Every so often, the mellow monotony is broken by the ego-plumping excitement of swimming out into the waves to rescue some floundering child whose mother will be so suffused with gratitude that her nipples will pop up in salute. Still, despite all the perks of position, the saver of swamped souls eventually wonders if he should not find an actual job, perhaps a real career. This impulse is never more pronounced than after encountering an ex-girlfriend and her fatherless five-year-old son at the fifteen-year high-school reunion. The call of adulthood is strong, but so is the tugging of the flesh tide.
