Few modern entertainments are more intrinsically dramatic than the sport of boxing. Not only are the contests themselves filled with agonies and exultation, but the combatants’ lives outside the ring, as brought to pulse-quickening reality by Body and Soul (1998), are one round after another of knockdown, drag-out emotional battery. Giving it a center of authenticity beyond most movies in the pugilist genre, Body and Soul features an actual professional boxer--Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini--in the lead role as a small-time slugger who is counted out by all whom he loves and cherishes as he scraps his way to the big bout.
