Review

Pop painter Andy Warhol is credited with being one of the most influential creative catalysts of that towering decade of limitless artistic experimentation and innovation, the 1960s. More so than for his own canvases, Warhol is remembered as a collector of people. Warhol staffed his Factory with an array of oddballs, deviants, and prodigies, all of whom were propelled to extravagant everyday excesses by an overwhelming drive to become famous. One such Warhol hanger-on, a lesbian man-hater and frustrated writer named Valerie Solanas, bristled at the notion of having been used and discarded by Andy and emptied a pistol into his chest. The circumstances and immediate aftermath of Solanas’s rash criticism are recreated in I Shot Andy Warhol (1996).
