Review
In the Realm of the Senses (1976), the granddaddy of all Japanese art films, received an NC-17 rating for its taboo-busting sexual content. Written and directed by Nagisa Oshima, this pre-war tale of sexual obsession that drives a man (Tatsuya Fuji) and his female servant (Eiko Matsuda) to the brink of death and insanity is allegedly based on a true story. This film runs the gamut of kinky sex, ranging from strangulation to strange insertions, and there is very little that Eiko Matsuda leaves to the imagination.
