Killers are suckers for a pretty lady in distress, which establishes the motivation behind Keifer Sutherland’s hit man on the highway pulling over to pick up stranded but starkly enchanting drifter Melora Walters in the sandy, windy, quirky, perversely noir romance Desert Saints (2002). Keifer the killer knows how to pick a moll, and Melora’s misfit gives every indication of being as wacky as the paid murderer is amoral. Despite the customarily flattened affect common to his profession, Sutherland is somewhat stuck on the girl’s wayward charm, and he recruits her to be his on-the-job assistant. But is she truly the freak she appears to be, or is she really a cop acting crazy?
