A Bell from Hell (1973) is among the most disturbing films in the European horror canon due to the real-life terror that occurred on its set. On the final day of shooting, director Claudio Guerín mysteriously plummeted to his death from a church tower featured prominently in the plot. Even without this terrifying true-to-life tidbit, the French-Spanish spine-tingler gets maximum effect from its talented, Euro-cult cast. Christine Betzner and Nuria Gimeno play innocent young women who are treated to hellishly imaginative S&M tortures in scenes that can be difficult for the squeamish. If you can bear it, however, priceless glimpses of both women’s assets await.
