There has never been a better era for making American movies about race relations than the early 1970s. Today, a Jewish director might hesitate about filming a script that has a scary black man breaking into the home of a white Beverly Hills couple and turning their life upside down with his demands for cash and orgasm, but Larry Cohen pulled no politically sensitive punches in Bone (1972). Putting the black in black comedy, shiny ebony leading man Yaphet Kotto casts a dark shadow of doubt over the preconceived notions of color coordination.
