A former soldier rises through the ranks of the South American gaucho cowboys in the spirited outlaw western El Muerto (1975). Loosely based on a short story by Modernist master Jorge Luis Borges, Héctor Olivera’s film describes the rise and fall of Benjamin Ortalora (Juan José Camero), a Uruguayan Civil War veteran who dabbles in murder and smuggling after his days on the front lines are over. Sadly the possibilities of the Wild West begin to fade with the opening of the twentieth century, and Ortalora is left with a paucity of options. Here’s a suggestion: try scoring with Thelma Biral. The curvaceous Uruguayan is ravishing in her role as a prized mistress.
