In the world as presented by director John Waters, every character of any interest is obsessed with sex. The leading lady of A Dirty Shame (2004) is a middle-aged Baltimore anti-babe whose vocation is to run a convenience store but whose avocation is to see and condemn the ravages of lust everywhere she sets her piggy, sneering eyes. With this advanced degree of libidinal energy percolating within the cauldron of self-imposed repression, is it any wonder that the venal vigilante’s daughter ranks among the town’s most adored strippers? Luckily, the old lady suffers a trauma to the head and her insulted brain awakens to the wondrous and healing powers of applied eroticism. Would that all accidents were as happy as that of A Dirty Shame.
