As if Hef hasn’t been rewarded enough, director Robert Heath flatters him with the admiring documentary Hugh Hefner: Once Upon a Time (1992). The king of the Playboy empire waxes philosophic about his approach to family and fatherhood, even as he describes the glitzy fortune he built on skin rags. Of course it hasn’t all been poolside hedonism for the smoking jacket-clad Hef--as the entrepreneur describes, his business has been hassled by critics, censors, the federal government, and other meddlesome entities. Surprisingly there’s a paucity of skin here, though the beautiful Dorothy Stratten shows a bit in a scene shot prior to her tragic death.
