The reason sitcoms have such a bad reputation is that they so often take the same old formula and give it nothing new beyond a new title, new theme song, and new actors. This short-lived sitcom is a case in point. Everyday dad Don Gardner (David Groh) tries hard to provide for his messed-up family, even though something always seems to happen to drain his wallet unexpectedly. “It’s funny because it’s true!”Hardly. Co-starring the very Emma Thompson-like Joan Hackett, this 1978 series died on the vine because, well, we’ve seen it all about a BILLION times before. Surprise! They have a mother in law character that criticizes everyone! Shock! The kids are always getting into trouble! Gimme a break. Even in 1978 this was cliché, and it’s sad that the same cliché is still played out every single TV season. Sadly, Hackett succumbed to cancer five years after this show was axed. Hey, she may have appeared in a suck-ass sitcom, but she didn’t deserve that kind of a fate. Rob Schneider on the other hand…
