Review

After CBS ditched Mary in 1986, annoyed viewers made their feelings felt that they didn’t wantMary Tyler Moore to leave their screens. Well, it may have taken two and a half years for CBSto make good on their promise that she would return, but make good they did when they debuted Annie McGuire, a dramedy about two newlyweds with a past. With Tyler Moore’s character marrying Nick (Denis Arndt) and the two of them pooling their kids, they tried to balance their private and professional lives like every single sitcom character ever has tried to do. Throw in some cantankerous parents (the hell you say!), and you’ve got a formula that has worked many times over the years but failed many times more. The writers strike and some early cast changes didn’t help the series, with most reviewers calling the show tired and unoriginal. The series was put on ‘hiatus’ after six episodes, never to return. In a brief side note, MTM the company that Mary Tyler Moore started to produce her earlier shows, was sold soon after this show was canceled for $300m. I guess she really did ‘make it after all’.
