Director Martin Bell, who made the influential early 80s documentary Streetwise (1984) about homeless people in Los Angeles, decided to dramatize one of the stories from that film with his narrative feature debut American Heart (1992). Jeff Bridges stars as Jack, a man getting out of prison after serving a five year stint for robbery, whose fourteen year old son Nick (Edward Furlong) tracks him down after more or less ignoring Nick for his entire life. Jack hopes to get his life back on track and the last thing he needs is a teenager to provide for as well—not to mention Jack's desire to not let his terrible life habits rub off on his child—but Nick's persistence finds them living together in squalor in a Seattle transient hotel. Jack takes a job as a window washer and soon starts a relationship with Charlotte (Lucinda Jenney), a woman who began corresponding with him while he was in prison. Nick, too, finds himself in the throes of infatuation with a teenage "working girl" named Molly (Tracey Kapisky) who lives with her stripper mother Diane (Shareen Mitchell) in the same building. The somewhat idyllic life they try to put together for themselves is then disrupted by the arrival of Jack's old partner in crime Roy (Jared Hinkle), who becomes determined that if he can't get Jack back into the life, perhaps he can recruit Nick instead. This intense drama isn't overtly focused on sex and nudity, but there is a skinsational trip to the strip club where Shareen Mitchell's character works and we see her dance topless on stage with several other gals! That should give you an American Heart-on!
