How this series died off after only one season is a mystery we’ll never solve. American Gothic was a true horror drama set in a small South Carolina town called Trinity. Sheriff Lucas Buck (Gary Cole) is the town sheriff, and his word seems to be golden for all that live in Trinity. In fact, the way everyone just does as they’re told… there’s something a little odd about this place, not to mention Sheriff Buck himself. Lucas's son, Caleb Temple (Lucas Black), who believes that a man called Gage was his true father, is just trying to get along in life but everyone around him seems to want a piece of him. The local doctor wants to know why the Sheriff is suddenly so interested in Caleb, while his cousin comes to town to protect Caleb, falling in love with Lucas in the process. And what of Caleb’s dead sister (Sarah Paulson), who seems prepared to do whatever it takes to keep Buck away? What viewers really clicked on to in this show were the eerie atmosphere, the fantastic writing, and the uniformly great performances, and despite a cult following that stretched around the world, CBS seemingly did everything in their power to kill it off. This included running episodes out of order, changing the timeslot, and eventually just pressing the nuke button on it. Brenda Bakke and Paige Turco co-starred and if the spookiness of the series didn’t get you, their knockout looks sure as heck did.
