Star-crossed teen lovers come to the realization that love hurts in the sudsy Mexican melodrama Amar te duele (2002). From the moment they meet, rich girl Renata (Martha Higareda) and slum-dwelling Ulises (Luis Fernando Peña) experience a carnal connection that transcends their wildly divergent social statuses. Unfortunately Renata’s aristocratic parents don’t see it quite the same way and threaten to truck their daughter off to Canada unless she stays away from her lower-class flame. A multiple Ariel Award winner, Fernando Sariñana’s film was celebrated by critics for its unsparing view of the social divisions plaguing contemporary Mexico City. Needless to say, the film’s view of Higareda’s sumptuous mounds is also an obvious draw.
