It’s 1915 in Australia and German prisoners of war and migrants of German descent are being held in internment camps. But Australians being Australians, discipline isn’t exactly the first order of business, so it’s not long before one of the prisoners, a violinist, falls in love with one of the local Aussie broads. The unspeakably beautiful Tushka Bergen plays Frieda Kennon, a country girl who can’t help the nationality of the man she falls in love with, Franz Muller (Jochen Hurst). What follows is a well-made account of life in Australia in the early 20th century, made even better by Bergen’s understated performance. Catch Tushka’s tushy inVoices and Hurrah and her on screen mom Lisa Harrow in both 1975’s The Tempter (where she’s young and hot) and 1997’s Sunday (where she’s old and not).
