Biography

Noted as one of the country’s most popular actresses in their Golden Age of cinema, actress Akiko Wakabayashi has made quite the career for herself acting almost exclusively in movies for her native Japan. One notable exception is her only US film, and it’s a good one: the James Bond flick You Only Live Twice(1967). As one of the first Asian Bond Girls, she plays the character Aki and gives 007 a massage-plus in a blue bra and tiny shorts that will leave you shaken and stirred. While it was a noteworthy role, it was actually one of Akiko’s last before she retired just one film later. Prior to the Bond, James Bond, experience, alluring Akiko appeared in almost 30 movies between 1958-1967, including one named after her, Akiko (1961). She also appeared as Tamiya in King Kong vs. Godzilla (1962) and as the same character in its US counterpart of the same title, released in 1963; it was the original film cut with new scenes to suit an American audience. The Tokyo-born beauty took the role of Hamako the Gangster Moll in Dogora (1964); played Princess Selina Salno of Sergina in Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster; Sayuri Sugimoto in The Stranger Within a Woman(1966), and Reiko in Diamonds of the Andes (1968). In her few short television credits, she appeared as Kyoko in Ultra Q in 1966, as Setsuko Hamaguchi in Ultraman: A Special Effects Fantasy Series, and Tamiko in the UK series Shirley’s World starring Shirley MacLaine (yes, that Shirley MacLaine) as a globe-trotting magazine writer and photographer. Mr. Skin is double-oh glad to have seen Ms. Akiko in her golden glory.
