African Skies

You’ve got to hand it to late 70’s TV. Even though America didn’t want to hear it, there were a lot of TV shows in that time preaching things like racial equality to middle America. Of course they all sunk like Jimmy Hoffa but at least they tried. In the early 90’s they were still trying to bring us together, albeit in a far more sanitized, pre-shrunk, allergy-free, guaranteed not to raise an eyebrow kind of way. One of those making an admirable attempt was African Skies, an adventure series about a black teen (Rouxent Brown) and a white teen (Simon James), living in post-Apartheid South Africa. Together the two get into all manner of mischief, but being as it’s an American TV show, you know that they’ll be fine by the end of the half-hour. Catherine Bach provides much of the allure of this series, though she was well beyond her curvaceous Dukes of Hazzard form by the time this job came around. For her most skinful work to date, check out her lesbianic turn in the 1978 feature, Nicole. Mmmm, long nails…
