Audrey Tautou, France’s answer to Audrey Hepburn, re-teams with Amelie (2001) director Jean-Pierre Jeunet for an Oscar-nominated drama boasting lyrical dramatic sweep. Set in a rural French village during WWI, A Very Long Engagement (2004) follows a frail young woman (Tautou) who’s determined to find out whether her soldier husband (Gaspard Ulliel) has died on the front. Though the story is a somber one, the film’s luxurious set pieces and rapturous performances are undeniably appealing. Equally so is Tautou, whose very lengthy appointment with a skilled masseur will make you wish you could trade hands with the lucky sap.
