Remember the time when you couldn’t put a minority on TV unless it was in Good Times? Paul Rodriguez certainly does, especially after this ill-fated sitcom was pulled from the air barely a month after it was first screened. Rodriguez played Paul (AKA: Pablo), a Mexican-American stand-up comedian who gets big laughs during his stage act for his Mexican stereotypes but gets big grief from his unimpressed family back at home. The first sitcom to star a Latino comic as its lead, the series was perhaps a decade ahead of its time and, despite a cast with names such as Hector Alizondo, Mario Lopez and (ahem) Bea Arthur, it sank faster than a Pauly Shore action movie. Latino hottie Martha Velez co-starred, only to go on to a decade of obscurity before finally showing her quesadillas in the skin-aplenty indie flick Star Maps, several years later.
