A for Andromeda

Review

Based on the Fred Hoyle/John Elliot book A For Andromeda: A Novel For Tomorrow, this 1961 TV series was ‘futuristically’ set in 1970, where a team of scientists decipher a mysterious signal from space and learn that it provides instructions on how to build a powerful computer. Once the computer is put together, the team’s leading members, Fleming and Dawnay, argue over what the true intentions of the machine are. It seems to be trying to create a living organism and when it apparently compels a lab assistant to commit suicide, the organism takes on the exact form of the assistant, calling itself Andromeda and starts to get nasty.  Very Twilight Zone-like in it’s own way, this series starred none other than Julie Christie in her on-screen debut as Andromeda, barely four years before she would win herself a Best Actress Oscar for her appearance in Darling (1965). The Kidman-esque body of Christie has been seen naked quite a few times over the last thirty years, so if you’re wondering what you’re missing, take a look at Demon Seed (1977),where she’s nailed by a horny computer, orDon’t Look Now (1973), where a younger Christie shows her perkys frequently.
