The subject of women’s prison has fascinated Hollywood all the way back from the 1930s and ’40s. But it was in the 1970s that women-in-prison movies—also known as W.I.P. flicks—truly broke out of the box.

The undisputed queen of women’s prison movies is African-American knockout Pam Grier, who gets chained up, stripped down, and busts out all over in The Big Bird Cage, The Big Doll House, Women in Cages, and Black Mama, White Mama.

Before becoming an Academy Award winning director, Jonathan Demme made the women-in-prison classic Caged Heat with Cheryl Rainbeaux Smith, Erica Gavin, Roberta Collins, and other drive-in superstarlets in the buff behind bars.

That’s not to be confused with the ultimate women-in-prison film, Chained Heat, which stars Linda Blair nude as she battles naked lesbian Sybil Danning for control of a prison where the warden is using naked female inmates to make porn videos in his office hot tub.

Spanish director Jesus Franco is a master of the women’s prison genre. He puts a kinky spin on the topic with his wild and brutal cult hits 99 Women, Women Behind Bars, and Women in Cell Block 9. Franco’s Sadomania even stars a male-to-female transsexual as the sadistic warden!

Other women’s prison standouts are Laura Gemser nude in Violence in a Women’s Prison, Karen Mani nude in Alley Cat, Linda Blair taking on Sylvia Kristel in Red Heat, and all the sick sexual experiments perpetrated against captive victims in the Ilsa movies.

Women’s prison in the real world is no place to visit. Women’s prison movies are pure celebrity nudity heaven.
