At some point you've gotta ask: what is going on in the brain of that dude with the pencil thin mustache? America's golden age of freakish counterculture peaked just after the death of the 1960s. In what era other than the early 1970s could an obese trans woman become an underground star through eating real dog shit in an avant garde film, while sharing top billing with an anus that possessed the singular ability to distend upon command, to music? Such is the genius of aberration showcased in Pink Flamingos (1972), cult director John Waters's self-proclaimed "exercise in poor taste." Essentially, the film is about a rivalry between Babs Johnson (Divine) and Raymond and Connie Marble (David Lochary and Mink Stole). When Babs is dubbed the filthiest person alive by a national tabloid, the Marbles are very upset. Since they kidnap women, impregnate them and sell the babies to lesbians, the Marbles are convinced they're really the filthiest people alive, and want Babs to know it. From there, it's an old fashioned filth off to determine who's the king of disgusting, including shots of Babs eating dog poop, crushing a chicken alive during one sexual assault scene, a tar and feathering and the infamous singing butthole scene. Look on the nudity in this one at your own risk, be it Elizabeth Coffey flashing her tits before pulling down her pants and showing she's got a boy toy to play with as well, Cookie Muller showing all three B's as she takes a cock while killing a cock via crushing, or the tiny titted Mink Stole going topless while sucking on some toes. The most normal, and we're very hesitant to use that word, stuff we get is the curly haired blonde Mary Vivian Pearce fleeing her bed topless after a bad dream and the pregnant Susan Walsh having to flash her jugs to a dude jerking it in the woods. If there's ever a debate about the weirdest flick to launch its director into superstardom, Pink Flamingos definitely has a leg to stand on!
