Review

James Caan portrays legendary literary gumshoe Philip Marlowe in director Bob Rafelson's 1998 adaptation of the Raymond Chandler novel Poodle Springs, set in 1963. Old age has crept up on the still-tough-as-nails Marlowe as he settles down to marry a young socialite (rocking redhead Dina Meyer). Still, life can never be uncomplicated for Marlowe as he stumbles into a blackmail case and ends up killing a photographer (David Keith) who's been harassing an exotic dancer (La Joy Farr). In time, Marlowe concludes that even his father-in-law (Joe Don Baker) is up to no good, and Poodle Springs concludes with a classically cynical film noir take on life-as-a-bowl-of-corruption. Brightening up the story's many dark hues are sumptuous seat shots of Meyer and tasty pasties on Farr.
