36 fillette (1988)

Brief Nudity

Review

French cinema's preeminent contemporary provocateur, writer-director Catherine Breillat first broke through with the taboo-smashing shocker A Real Young Girl (1976). Breillat's tangentially related 36 fillette (1988) is the story of teen beauty Lili (Delphine Zentout), who becomes so voluptuous so suddenly that the title is a reference to her abundant bra size. While vacationing with her family, Lili aims to lose her virginity, but she unluckily chooses a partner in middle-aged mook Maurice (Etienne Chicot) and learns that sex is never simple. However, anytime Delphine is on-screen—dressed or (as she is frequently) undressed—the sex she radiates is positively ooh-la-luscious.
