Review

Movies about people who cannot hear go hand in glove with awards. Three Oscars went to 2021’s CODA (which stands for “Children of Deaf Adults”), including Best Picture! Other hearing-impaired characters are featured in past Best Picture nominees, such as Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994), Babel (2006) and There Will Be Blood (2007). Indeed, actresses who communicate via sign language in their performances — from Anne Bancroft and Patty Duke in The Miracle Worker (1962) to Holly Hunter and Anna Paquin in The Piano (1993) — all went home with the gold. Thanks to Children of A Lesser God (1987), Marlee Matlin remains the only deaf woman in real-life to win an Academy Award for Best Actress. The results are similar all over the world. In the Netherlands, 170 Hz (2011) uses Dutch sign language to relay the romance between deaf teens Evy (Gaite Jansen) and Nick (Michael Muller). As a result, the flick picked up the audience prize at the Gouden Kalf Awards and Ms. Jansen was nominated for Best Actress. Mr. Skin also has a statuette in his pants for the sexy starlet, especially when she sheds her threads for the lens. In one scene, Evy’s guy dries off her hair so she rewards him with a kiss and a glimpse of her glandulars. Gaite also soaks her bum in the tub. Breast of all, she throws us a bone while throwing paint around in the buff! When she bares her nude boobs, bush and booty, who needs dialogue?
